California Sword Fern

Polystichum munitum

Deep in the thickets of Ohlone land, California Sword Fern grows gracefully, unfurling from a spiral, the plants’ young fiddlehead, rolling out like a gift ribbon in the scented forests of bay laurel and the misty environs of the redwoods.

The young growth of witt, the California Sword Fern is called a fiddlehead, delicate and elegant, full of tender flavor when it appears during springtime as a short-period seasonal delicacy.

The mature California Sword Fern grows on the hillsides near creeks, and—like an older, protective sibling—provides shelter for younger plants that take comfort under its mighty leaves.
