Douglas Iris

Iris douglasiana

kaanak ‘innaani ‘uyak minway mak warép tiwšini

I arrive early when the world is blossoming,

roket holše, ‘ek waara čaččena tawwa hinni-t hišmen

Purple and brilliant, unfolding from the warmth the sunlight.

kaanak miṭṭini šaatotka nommo ne warép

I grow in shaded areas of the East Bay hillsides,

kamiš-k holye hiram wettel summentak

You can find me underneath a mighty redwood,

‘imnyom ṭowheni rummeytka

Near a rushing creekway,

‘at hemmenmu roote holše huse sokóotetka

And with the fragrant bay laurel trees.
